"Vanity"
Artist Statement:
"Vanity" is a nearly 8 foot tall marker piece I created as a testament to beauty, vanity, and color. The main subject is the familiar "Venus de Milo" statue which was created between 130BC-100BC. The statue depicts the Greek Goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite (Venus to Romans). To the right of the statue I used conceptual shapes and colors to force the viewers focus to move around the piece. At the base of the statue I inscribed several quotes, in a somewhat jumbled fashion. The original work is created entirely with Crayola Brand Magic Markers and a Jumbo Bold Sharpie. They are:
Beauty is short-lived tyranny.- Socrates
Beauty without expression is boring.- Ralph Waldo Emerson
Everything has beauty, but not everyone can see it. - Confucius
Vanity is the quicksand of reason- George Sand
The best and most beautiful things in life cannot be seen or even touched, but must be felt with the heart.- Helen Keller
Enjoy!
